March 23rd, 2020 will be remembered in British retail boardrooms for many years. This was the first time the UK government stated that everyone must ‘stay at home’ because of the new coronavirus sweeping the nation. The legal lockdown started three days later, after the Coronavirus Act 2020 was rushed through parliament, but this was the start of a painful period that lasted the best part of two years.

Most non-essential retail had to be closed for long periods during 2020 and 2021. In July 2020 the fashion retailer Primark announced that they had already lost over £800m in expected sales. It was a grim time for the entire retail industry.
